Natural Gas Outlook: ₹324 Breakout Could Open ₹353 and ₹478

On this page 7 sections
In short: MCX Natural Gas October futures were near ₹315.70 on 14 October 2026, just below a major resistance zone at ₹324. Whether price can close above that zone, or gets pushed back towards support, will depend largely on US weather, storage and production data. A sustained close above ₹324 opens ₹353 ($3.70) as Target 1, with ₹478 ($5.01) as an extended Target 2.

Why the $ figures differ from NYMEX. The US benchmark quoted above ($3.169) is the November NYMEX contract, while MCX October futures expire earlier and also carry the rupee exchange rate, so the two prices never match exactly. Rule of thumb: MCX price ≈ US price × rupee per dollar. If the rupee weakens, MCX can rise even when the US price is flat.
Why ₹324 matters
The ₹324 area is close to the top of the October contract range (₹325.50) and to a resistance level published separately at about ₹324.47 [1]. Three things can happen from here:
- Breakout: a decisive close above ₹324 ($3.39) that holds in the following sessions opens Target 1 at ₹353 ($3.70). A move to Target 2 at ₹478 ($5.01) is a much bigger extension that would need strong follow-through and supportive global prices.
- Rejection: repeated failures at ₹324 would bring the support zones at ₹300–305 and ₹291–292 back into focus [2].
- False breakout: an intraday spike above ₹324 that does not hold on a closing basis. Volume and open interest help separate a real move from a short-lived spike.
What moves natural gas prices

- Weather: heating-demand forecasts can change the outlook within days. Milder forecasts were weighing on prices in the latest reports [3].
- Production: lower US output can support prices if demand holds [3].
- Storage: the weekly US inventory report (Thursdays) often triggers sharp moves.
- Rupee and expiry: MCX tracks the US price in rupees, and the October contract expires on 27 October 2026, so any view on this contract has a short shelf life.
Risks to keep in mind
Commodity futures are leveraged: a small price move can mean a large gain or loss relative to margin. Close to expiry, liquidity and rollover costs matter. A warmer weather outlook, a larger-than-expected storage build or a weaker US benchmark could all undermine any move above ₹324.
Pokharna Research view
Bias: bullish only on a confirmed breakout above ₹324 ($3.39).
| ₹ / MMBtu | ≈ US$ / MMBtu | |
|---|---|---|
| Target 2 (extended) | ₹478 | $5.01 |
| Target 1 | ₹353 | $3.70 |
| Breakout level | ₹324 | $3.39 |
| Support 1 | ₹300 – ₹305 | $3.14 – $3.19 |
| Support 2 | ₹291 – ₹292 | $3.05 – $3.06 |
Below ₹324, patience is warranted; a failed breakout brings ₹300–305 and then ₹291–292 back into focus. ₹478 is a speculative extension, not a near-term forecast. The October contract expires on 27 October 2026, so neither target should be assumed achievable before expiry; any position near expiry needs a fresh look at liquidity and rollover costs. We will track the US storage data and weather forecasts and update this note if the picture changes.
