Results After Friday's Close: HDFC, ICICI, Axis and 5 More

On this page 6 sections
In short: Since Friday's market close, seven banks and ixigo announced July–September 2026 results. Six of the seven banks grew profit. The main driver was lower provisions for bad loans, not faster interest income, and margins got thinner at ICICI Bank and Axis Bank. These results reach the market on Monday 19 October.

HDFC Bank: weak headline, better core

- Loans up 30% (24.1% excluding FCNR-linked loans)
- Gross NPA fell to 1.20% from 1.58% a year ago
- But margin slipped to 4.18% from 4.30% a year ago and 4.36% last quarter
Axis Bank: profit jump from lower provisions
Profit rose 38% to ₹7,003 crore, while NII grew only 12%. The gap came from provisions falling 52% to ₹1,694 crore.
- Gross NPA 1.16% (1.28% last quarter)
- Margin 3.36%, down from 3.55% a year ago
- Loans up 23%, deposits up 21%
PSU banks and others

- Yes Bank: profit +65% to ₹1,080 crore; NII +22.7%
- IDBI Bank: profit −39% to ₹2,205 crore, but only because last year had a ₹1,699 crore one-time gain from selling its NSDL stake. Without it, profit rose about 14%; NII rose 29%
- ixigo: record profit of ₹63.4 crore, helped by a partial stake sale in Freshbus; revenue +13% to ₹321 crore, while adjusted EBITDA fell 17%
What it means for Monday
- Bad-loan costs are the story. Most profit growth came from lower provisions and improving asset quality, not from earning more per loan.
- Margins are under pressure. ICICI and Axis both earned less on each rupee lent than a year ago. Watch whether management sees this continuing.
- Read past the headline. HDFC Bank's 4.7% hides 12.6% core growth; IDBI's −39% hides 14% underlying growth.
